Torben Gammelgaard (b. 1972) is a Danish artist working with ceramics and painting. His naïve and humorous world of motifs – typically featuring animals – is phantasmagorical. The slow process of creation, with layer upon layer of paint, gives his works their characteristic texture and depth.

Ceramic vessels and plates are approached as sculptural objects rather than functional forms, with weight, proportion, and touch playing an important role.

Across Gammelgaard’s deceptively slow making practice, a personal visual world unfolds through naïve and humorous animal figures with a deliberate simplicity, yet often carry a deeper emotional charge. They can feel playful, lonely, absurd, or vulnerable — acting as quiet reflections of human behaviour and feeling.
