Banksy is the best-known street artist to have emerged from the urban art movement. “When you go to an art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.” Banksy was born in Bristol where many of his early wall pieces still exist. Although his true identity is not known he is one of the most celebrated contemporary artists of his generation and is widely recognised by his distinctive stencil technique. His work is typically satirical, darkly humorous and comments on the hypocrisy of current society. His message is typically anti-war, anti-capitalist and anti-establishment. As well as his popular graffiti, Banksy also directed the Academy Award Nominated film, ʻExit Through the Gift Shop.ʼ His infamous Bristol City Art Gallery exhibition in June 2009 involved him taking over the entirety of the city-run art gallery. The exhibition featured installations incorporated into works already owned by the museum along side 78 new works.
